Aran islands 12.08.2016
Ireland is just a small island. Though there are three tiny islands nearby. Aran islands. The biggest of them Inishmore is just 13km length and 3km width. One can get there only with ferry. Mobile coverage is also quite poor (or I just had bad mobile operator). Though even here it's not that easy to hide from people. A lot of tourists are coming here every day.
The ferry arrives at 11 in the morning and return back at 4-5 in the evening. So if you were not lucky with weather, well, you were not lucky with weather. Probably you have to suffer under rain.
Tourist can travel on island by walking (too slow and long), bicycle (the best option), by horse (too expensive) and by bus (too boring). You can rent a bike almost on the exit from ferry. No ID or credit card required. Just 10 euro pledge and you're free to go. Anyway it would be hard to get away with bike from this tiny island. Though nobody has checked if I really returned a bike or not. They just changed my paper about the pledge back to my 10 euro.
Though the road is not really good for a bicycle trip. Road of stone, often up, makes you walk with bicycle instead of riding it.
But in the end you come to very beautiful coast.
About 1200 people are living on these islands. Quite a village. They are a bit isolated from the rest of Ireland, that's why they managed to save traditions and language much better. For most of them Irish is the first language. Though they can freely speak English as well.
Locals are working either in tourist areas, either still in farming and fishing. And of course famous aran wool. A long time ago it was mainly used to make sweaters for fishers. Wool wasn't cleaned from fat, and sometimes even put with one more layer of goose fat, so it was water proof. And of course Celtic ornaments on it.
I wasn't lucky with the weather. It was rainy the whole day long. In sunny weather it must be much more beautiful. In one of the shops a sales women told me that there is no clients in such a weather. And it should not be that rainy in summer. She even suggested to leave the bicycle at her place and return by bus, Fortunately then the rain calmed down and I could return back with bicycle. And the way back was down from hill.
